4 tips for balancing work and life

When you’re trying to build a career, it can seem like it comes at the cost of your health, well-being and relationships.

You may find yourself saying no to nights out, missing dinners or working way more than your 8 hours.

There’s no doubt work is essential, however, it doesn’t have to come at the cost of your well-being.

Part of being successful is finding time to do things that bring you health and happiness.

But when the office follows you home and you’re overloaded with tasks, finding time to do the things you love begins to sound like an urban myth.

The happiest and most successful are the ones that can find balance.

Here are some tips to help you move forward in your career and personal life.

Give yourself some downtime

Kick-off your shoes and give those sore feet a good rest.

Switch off and recharge your energy.

This means switching off your phone as well. ‘Unplug’ from your phone to give yourself a proper break from it all.

Turning off notifications on your phone will keep you present during out-of-office hours.

Rethink your commitments

It’s time to think about what adds to your quality of life and what saps away your time and energy.  Makeover your schedule to support your goals and well-being.

There might be some hard sacrifices there, but ultimately it’s for the best. Spend whatever free time you have scheduled on things that bring you joy.

Build your energy

If you’ve got a lot on your plate, you need a big stomach to get through it all.

Spending time on your health is going to help you find the energy to do it all.

Despite what you may think, movement gives you energy rather than depleting it.

Head to the gym a couple of times a week, go for a swim or get outdoors for a jog. It’ll help to strengthen your body and your mind.

Meditation a couple of times a week, to clear your mind, will also go a long way.

Give yourself work boundaries

Your work shouldn’t be your whole life, nor should anybody expect it to be.

It’s fine now and then to pitch in a little extra effort but remember you need to take care of yourself and make a contract to put your needs first, always.

You can say no. Once you set boundaries for yourself, you’ll find it easier to find time for life outside of work.
